Print This Page China lifts ban on six US pork plants
CHINA - China has lifted its ban on pork from six US processing plants, including five plants that are owned by Smithfield Foods. An acceleration in pork sales to China could help alleviate current over supply of pork in the US and aid price improvements at the farm gate.
China offers significant export potential as the country consumes five times as much pork as the US. Its pork production sector has liquidated substantially in recent months in light of PRRS epidemic and other economic pressures. Food inflation rates have reached record-highs this autumn and China needs to increase pork supplies for the New Year and forthcoming 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
