The supply of live pigs remain very high and continues to meet brisk demand from the slaughter companies. However, the quotations from individual countries, do seem to be developing in very various ways.

Prices are still developing steadily in Central Europe, but prices in Scandinavia are exerting some pressure. Both Denmark and Sweden report slight falls this week. This is thought to be a factor of the Christmas trade which is expected to decrease from the end of the week. Adding to this, is the news that processors will close on 20 December at many plants and so demand is expected to fall.

The Spanish quotation, shows that ground is still being made up. Having increased three times in succession, it shows a corrected EUR 1.26 per kg slaughter weight, thus catching up with the European mid-fielders. The market is still being stimulated as a result of private storage aid. After signing the contracts, a period of four weeks is left for storing the meat. Spanish market observers report that many companies still have not yet complied

Trend: Export refunds anticipated to take effect over the next few weeks, going on to support export. No particular peak, however, is expected for seasonal reasons.
