Importers Defend Trade as Truss Demands PC Report
AUSTRALIA - There are fears pork producers may be in for a wait for the Productivity Commission's latest report into crisis-gripped industry, which is due to be handed to the Federal Government today. |

The flood of imports and other factors have resulted in producers currently losing up to A$40 per pig, which prompted the former Howard Government to commission the PC investigation.
Nationals Leader Warren Truss is now demanding the Rudd Government immediately release the PC report to give producers certainty about their future in a corrupted world market.
"The Productivity Commission report, examining whether critical circumstances exist to justify provisional safeguard measures for the pig industry, was due to be handed to the new Government today," Mr Truss said.
Meanwhile, the Canadian pork industry has defended its Aussie trade.
Jacques Pomerleau, chief executive of Canada Pork International, says there's no case for Australia to impose trade restrictions on imports, even though local growers say low farm gate prices are forcing many out of the industry.
Imports aren't the problem, he says.
"We can't agree with the fact that in order to resolve a problem that has to do with situations like a drought or very high feed costs that you need to block imports," he says.
