Hog Numbers up in North Dakota

The state had 182,000 hogs as of 1 December 2008, that's an increase of 13,000 from the previous year, says the North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service.

The record number of hogs in Dakota was set in 1943 at 1.1 million. The breeding inventory for the state was 37,000, up 4,500 from 2006 and teh total pig crop was 611,000, showing a rise of 81,000 from last year. It's the biggest rise seen in Dakota since 1961.

Average pigs per litter was at 9.8, the highest since record keeping began in 1924, and statistics showed that the market inventory totaled 144,500, up 8,500 from last year.
