Print This Page Rare Pigs are Born in South Dakato
US - Seven American mulefoot hogs were born at a farm in Dell Rapids, South Dakota between midnight and 1am on New Year’s Day.![]() |
| New blood for a rare breed. Seven more of these Mulefoot piglets arrived in Dell Rapids over the New Year. |
According to owner Bret Kortie, they are the only pig breed native to North America.
Kortie and his wife, Arie McFarlen, run the Maveric Heritage Ranch, an established farm that focuses on the preservation of rare and endangered breeds of livestock. The couple has owned the Dell Rapids farm for seven years. It has a number of livestock species native to or originating from the US.
“It’s been a long night,” Kortie said.
“The piglets are far more significant if only because they’re part of an endangered breed,” Kortie said.
