China Ploughs $Millions into Abattoir Upgrade

BEIJING - China is to invest more than 500 million yuan (US$68.8 million)in a nationwide pork quality overhaul. It will upgrade 3,279 abattoirs, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).

The nationwide campaign, which began during the autumn, will improve the quality of pork, the country's staple meat. The government banned 7,740 unqualified slaughterhouses and seized 1,940 tonnes of pork last year, according to Huang Hai, assistant minister of the MOC.

Huang said that relevant governmental agencies had formulated more than 10 new regulations on pig slaughtering and pork quality supervision. Although pork supply was on the rise, the price would still remain high during the first half of the year due to increasing prices of foodstuffs, transportation costs and other related factors.

Huge rises in food prices like pork, grain and cooking oil caused the consumer price index (CPI) to surge by 4.6 percent in the first 11 months of 2007.
