WPX Report: Board Lays Down Criteria for New Budget

US - The National Pork Board has promised to build a budget for the Pork Checkoff for next year based on producers working together to build a stronger industry.

Chris Harris, Senior Editor,
ThePigSite.com reports from World Pork Expo, Iowa.
National Pork Board president Lynn Harrison

National Pork Board president Lynn Harrison, speaking at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines USA said the board was seeking to identify the critical issues for the coming year.

He said they would be using producer direction and input from the Pork Forum, board meetings and committee meetings to highlight the major issues that needed to be addressed.

He said the main issues are:

  • The competitive advantage for US pork
  • The safeguard and expansion of international markets
  • Domestic pork expenditures
  • The trust and image of the industry and its products
  • Human capital - the development of producer leadership and technical advisors and the growth of a quality workforce.

"We will continue to work with producers and staff through the next few months in the budget process with the approval expected in November," said Mr Harrison.

"We are also in the process of a CEO search.

"Earlier this year we contracted with a professional search firm and worked with producers to determine what is needed in a new CEO.

"We want to make sure we are doing the right thin for our producers as we hire this position."
