Print This Page Chile shuts down six pork plants in dioxin scare
CHILE - The Health Department in Chile has quarantined six pork plants this week to investigate claims of high levels of dioxin in the meat after elevated levels were found in a shipment to South Korea. The action has prompted Japan to suspended imports of Chilean pork, according to Agence France Presse.
Dioxin is a chemical linked to chlorine that can be carcinogenic to humans.
A Health Department official said samples are being tested in Canada, and the results will determine whether the quarantine will be maintained or lifted.
Chile exported nearly $127 million worth of pork to Japan in 2007.
