Promotions Crucial to Total Volume of Pork Sold

01 October 2008

National Pig Association - The voice of the UK pig industry

UK - In saying the retail price increase of pork has been less than 14 percent over the past year, British Retail Consortium will have been using TNS data, as shown below, January to September 2008.

The figures will include promotions (which is why the increases are smaller than you might have expected). The drop from 17.61 percent in August to 13.83 percent in September shows just how good supermarkets are at their job.

Despite pig numbers shortening they have responded to consumer price sensitivity by driving down the price, which is why DAPP is barely moving at present.

Promotions play a big part in the total volume of pork sold by the supermarkets, as the chart above shows. Note the increase in activity this spring. Though a useful device, it is not clear whether the full cost of promotions is carried by the retailers concerned.

Thanks goes to Chris Lamb at BPEX for TNS data
