The Country Vet: a Dying Breed

According to Nigel Farndale in the Telegraph, the traditional vet is a thing of the past.

In an insight into the modern day practices of the vet Farndale looks at the more labour intensive aspects of the country vet's lot.

He examines the frustration encountered by the vets while dealing with the foot and mouth disease outbreak in the UK in 2001.

And he looks at how the veterinary profession in the UK has changed, turning more into a profession dominated by women and dealing with small animals rather than farm animals.

Farndale also examines the changing technology and understanding of the modern vet, far removed from the romantic image embodied in James Herriot's vets.
