Sale of 'Castrated' Pork to be Stopped

The announcement is a breakthrough for action group Pigs in Peril which announced it is taking food retailers Albert Heijn and Schuitema (C1000) to court for their part in castrating piglets without anaesthetics, reports DutchNews.nl.

Earlier this year the umbrella organisation of the supermarkets promised to stop selling product from piglets which have not been anaesthetised before castration from spring 2009.

The castration of 10 million piglets on Holland’s factory farms to get rid of unpleasant smells when the meat is cooked is unnecessary because the smell is hereditary and can be bred out, researchers at Wageningen University said earlier this year.
