Veterinary Dept To Propose Enclosed Pig Farm
MALAYSIA - The Kedah Veterinary Department will make a proposal to the government to set up a modern farm using the enclosed farming system for pig rearing in the state. Its director, Dr Abdul Razak Zailan, said the farm would be a one-stop centre for pig breeding and slaughtering as well as production of frozen pork, reports Bernama.
"Through this system, pork that comes out from the farm will be frozen and wrapped," he told reporters Friday.
He said effluent from the farm would be recycled, where it would be filtered and treated for re-use at the farm, while the pig stool would be dried using the effective micro organism system.
Abdul Razak said discussions would be held with the state executive council member in-charge of agriculture and local authorities to identify a suitable location, which would be far from residential areas, for the proposed pig farm.
Yesterday, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the state government, on the advice of the Kedah Veterinary Department, had cancelled the pig farm project planned at Bukit Selambau due to environmental factors.
The proposed pig farm was approved by the previous Barisan Nasional state government in December last year.
Meanwhile in Baling, more than 500 people staged a peaceful demonstration to protest the setting up of a pig farm in the state.
In a related development, the Kedah branch Malaysian Muslim Chambers of Commerce (DPIMK) lauded the state government's decision in cancelling the pig farm project at Bukit Selambau.
Its deputy chairman, Abdullah Hashim, said it was a right decision which reflected the state government's sensitivity to the needs of the Kedah people.
