UK Slaughter Statistics - February 2009

UK - According to the latest figures from the UK's Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the number of clean pigs sent for slaughter rose only very slightly in January.

The number of clean pigs sent for slaughter in January was 818,000, compared to 693,000 in December and 737,000 in November. The January slaughter figures appear higher due to it being a five-week month.

Also, 19,000 sows and boars were sent for slaughter in January, compared to 14,000 in December and 16,000 in November.

There was a slight drop in the average carcase weights for clean pigs at 77.2 kg. Meanwhile, the drop in slaughter weight for sows and boars was fairly sharp in January at 149.1 kg.

In total, the UK produced 66,000 tonnes of pig meat in January compared to 55,000 tonnes in December, 60,000 tonnes in November and 73,000 tonnes in October.
