IPPC Should Not Include Smaller Pig Farms

EU - The pig industry has had some success with its amendments to the proposed "recast" IPPC. However it failed to persuade sufficient MEPs from other countries that IPPC should not be extended to include smaller pig farms.

The next milestone along the route of a recast IPPC becoming law is 25 June when the Environment Council in Brussels will produce a "common position" between the Commission and the European Parliament.

The common position will then be considered by Parliament and this will involve a new round of amendments.

It is almost impossible for the pig industry to get an amendment tabled at this stage, to prevent IPPC being extended via nitrogen equivalence to smaller pig farms.

However, between now and the Environment Council announcing its common position, there is scope for the industry to lobby Brussels official and Defra ministers and officials, in a bid to influence the technical drafting work that is going on behind the scenes in preparing the Environment Council's common position.

In preparing a common position, officials will be working from this 397-page document.
