New Standard in Canadian Housing Unveiled
CANADA - For two years, Canada has been facing difficulties in pig production. But changing circumstances motivate the innovative sector to prepare for better times. And the farm that was shared with fellow pig producers on 16 April in Manitoba, Canada, was a good example of preparing for the future.
The Eagle Creek Hog Barn opened its doors to well over one thousand people to come and share in the know-how that was put into this project. Nedap’s dealers – Cawi Canada and New Stand AG Inc. – designed and supplied the technology, forming a close project team with their clients.

The building, fit for 1500 productive sows supplies the highest quality in construction, ventilation, penning and feeding technology.
EMI and Microfan provided the equipment for the ventilation system, which requires the highest standard in this humid continental climate-zone. Throughout the building, chimney ventilators combined with controlled air inlets ensure both correct air quality and movement.

The CARAS feeding system ensures an equal supply of small portions of fresh feed throughout the day to the weaned piglets.

A permanent built-in circulation system provides additional milk to each farrowing crate.
Much attention was drawn to the group housing system for pregnant sows. Eighteen Nedap Velos ESF (Electronic Sow Feeding) stations provide individual feeding for the pregnant sows from three to four days after insemination throughout the pregnancy.

Two feed types can be used to define the best formula for every sow.

Three Nedap-Velos heat-detectors provide a constant monitoring on sows returning into heat, immediately marking them with a colour.

A separate Nedap ESF station is positioned in a gilt group to provide a continuous flow of well trained gilts.

The lay-out of the barn was set up in such a way that the group housing can run as one dynamic group or as three smaller dynamic groups, each with their own separation-unit.
By early May, this farm will be stocked, starting one of Canada’s most modern hog barns.
