EU Pig Prices: Market Situation is Easing
EU - This week, the situation is clearly easing on the European slaughter pig market.
Many quotations are stabilising on the present price level, as is reported from Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Austria. In Sweden, the corrected quotation went up for exchange-rate reasons, and so did the Polish quotation. Ireland was able to put through price increases as a result of a decreasing supply of live animals.
The good demand at the European slaughter companies basically is confronted with slightly decreasing quantities of live pigs on offer. As a result, paying discounted prices is no longer an issue at individual slaughter companies in Germany, too. In addition to that, the H1N1 flu is not reported so much about any longer in the media, so the consumers, who had partly been made insecure by the whole matter, are getting back to demand pork. Spain in particular had suffered from restrictions enunciated by Russia in this context, thus being forced to accept the prices to go down. Meanwhile, however, easing of the situation is in sight there, too; for Russia is said to have lifted import bans they had imposed on pork from those Spanish provinces where no cases of flu outbreaks have been reported on.
Trend: The supply of pigs mature for slaughter is expected to be slightly declining all over Europe this week. So, prices are anticipated to remain unchanged at least. If the summer weather comes back again, prices might be increasing again as a result of the improving sales of meat for barbecue.
