EU Pig Prices: Price Barometer Shows Upward Trend
EU - There is an optimistic view on the overall situation on the slaughter pig market this week.
Many countries reported on quotations to rise and mark-ups being considerable. Particularly with regard to Germany, demand is said to develop in a very lively way. Thus, the price went up by 5 cents. Belgium and Austria succeeded as to mark-ups. The Netherlands were not quite able to catch up with Germany, having to settle for a 4-cents’ plus.
Unchanged quotations were reported from Spain, Denmark, Great Britain and Ireland. Spain as a tourist region is facing huge quantities of live pigs on offer, as a result of panic selling and late effects of the 1st May public holiday. As a consequence of a strike people had gone on at El Pozo slaughter company, more pigs mature for slaughter were delivered to abattoirs in the Catalonia region. Thus, the pressure on the prices went up, although prices usually are rising in May. On the other hand, exports towards Russia are starting to run again at steady domestic demand. The French quotation gave in slightly while the Swedish price decrease again must be attributed to changes in currency exchange rates.
Trend: Although one day of slaughter is going to be missing this week on Ascension Day public holiday, there is no need to worry. In preparation for the thus extended weekend, retail is ordering considerable quantities. So, nothing gets in the way of a friendly trend.
