Pork Price Up by 60 Sen Per Kg Following Move
MALAYSIA - The price of pork has gone up by 60 sen per kg following the move by farmers in Johor, Selangor, Penang and Perak to increase the ex-farm price of pigs, reported Nanyang Siang Pau.Quoting The Daily, The Star reports that National Pork Seller Association chairman Goh Chui Lai as saying the four states were the main sources of pork in the country.
"This will definitely burden the consumers and we hope Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Noh Omar could intervene to stop the price from increasing further," he said.
The pig farmers did not heed the call by the Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations Malaysia to allow the market force to determine the price of pork.
Federation of Livestock Farmers Association of Malaysia’s head of the pig unit Beh Kim Hee said it only suggested that its members use the floating system to determine the price but they had the final say on pricing.
"I cannot stop them if they want to increase the ex-farm price of pigs," he said.
