US - National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson yesterday commended US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack following publication of the final rule on the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) and general provisions for the Supplemental Agricultural Disaster Assistance Program."We commend USDA for implementing LIP, completing the foundation rules for all disaster provisions and look forward to future announcements as implementation work continues on the remaining program components," Mr Johnson wrote in a letter to Secretary Vilsack.
A standing disaster program was a top NFU farm bill priority. The program closes the single biggest hole in the farm safety net and ensures that those impacted by natural disasters will be able to continue production. Mr Johnson said this program will provide critical and predictable financial relief.
