UK Slaughter Statistics - July 2009

UK - According to the latest statitics produced by Defra (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), the UK's overall pigmeat production in June rose only very slightly compared to May.

Defra reports that in June, 706,000 clean pigs went for slaughter compared to 674,000 in May and 834,000 in April.

Last month and May, the number of sows and boars sent for slaughter were 15,000 compared to 20,000 in April.

There has been a very insignificant drop in the June average slaughter weight for clean pigs at 77.4 kg, compared to 77.7 kg in May and 77.2 kg in April. On the other hand, the average dressed carcase weight for sows and boars rose fairly sharply at 151.5 kg in June, compared to 149.1 kg in May and 144.2 kg in April.

In total, the UK produced 57,000 tonnes compared to 55,000 tonnes in May, 67,000 tonnes in April and 57,000 tonnes in March.
