As part of its fight back against negative publicity, the red meat industry has relaunched a web site promoting the positive role it can play in a balanced diet.

The site, www.meatandhealth.com, is designed to remind consumers and health professionals that red meat is a great source of protein, heart-healthy fats, vitamins and minerals (particularly iron).

BPEX Head of Marketing, Chris Lamb, said: "Media coverage over the past few months has frequently portrayed red meat as an 'unhealthy' food. In fact, the reverse is true – red meat is an excellent source of protein and packed with valuable nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

"Information on the site will help consumers and healthcare professionals to determine the true position of meat in a healthy, balanced diet and to understand that negative comment from the media, scientists and academics is not always what it appears to be."

Nutritionist Juliette Kellow who will provide answers to questions about healthy eating on the site echoes this point. She said: "A balanced diet is what all dietitians recommend. Excluding whole food groups such as meat can also put you at risk of other health issues such as iron and protein deficiency."

meatandhealth.com was set up more than 10 years ago, in recognition that health professionals and their patients needed balanced and accurate advice on healthy eating. The new-look site will offer interactive features, up-to-date news items, topical opinion pieces from leading health professionals and recipes for good health.

The web site is backed by BPEX, EBLEX, Hybu Cig Cymru and the Livestock and Meat Commission of Northern Ireland.
