UK Slaughter Statistics - October 2009
UK - The latest figures from Defra (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) indicate that the overall production of pigmeat in the UK neither decreased nor increased in September.
The total number of clean pigs sent for slaughter in September dropped fairly substantially, at 737,000 compared to 744,000 in August and 888,000 in July (which was a five-week month). The number of sows and boars sent for slaughter, however, remained constant in September, where the figure stands at 17,000 compared to 20,000 in July.
The average dressed carcase weight for clean pigs rose only very slightly in September at 79.2 kg in September, compared to 78.1 kg in August and 77.2 kg in July. The slaughter weight for sows and boars in September, on the other hand, rose slightly at 152.2 kg, compared to 149.8 kg in August and 155.2 kg in July.
All in all, the UK produced 61 kg of pigmeat in September and August, compared to 72 kg in July.
