Three New ASF Outbreaks Reported in Russia

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received Follow-up Report No. 13 yesterday, 8 December.

On 4 December, Laura Cordon at the Sochi Republican State Natural Preserve in Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, reported an outbreak of ASF in wild pig species. On the same date, the same occured in swine at a village in the district of Konstantinovsky in Rostovskaya. The third outbreak was also in wild species in Tract "Shirokoye" at the Sochi Republican State Natural Preserve in Sochi, Krasnodar Krai. This bring the total number of new outbreaks in the country to three.

The cause of the outbreak has still not been identified and is still under investigation, according to the OIE.

Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were run on both swine and wild pigs and results proved the presence of the ASF virus.

Several measures have been applied to prevent further spread of the disease in the country.
