Evidence of Negligence on Pig Farms Found

Last week Evira inspected nearly all of the 32 farms featured in clandestine video recordings made by the Rights for Animals activist group during the autumn.

Evira division head Taina Mikkonen told YLE Radio One that some of the findings are serious and have been passed on to the police for further investigation.

“Some of the cases of negligence were clearly more severe and some of them typical, and do not immediately work against the animals’ well being,� she explained.

The wretched conditions on some battery farms drew heavy criticism when the Rights for Animals activist group gained access to the farms and recorded evidence of the poor treatment of animals. The video material was shown on YLE's current affairs programme A-studio on 9 December. The organization did not directly tell the authorities where the farms were located, however Evira was able to pinpoint their location with the help of GPS technology.

On Thursday two demonstrators organised their own protest action during a sitting of Parliament, to show their disapproval of the animals’ treatment.
