OIE Reports H1N1 Flu Virus in South Korean Pigs

The South Korean veterinary authority has sent an Immediate Notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). It covers the detection of the H1N1 virus in pigs on 15 farms in the south and west of the country between 14 and 18 December. Altogether, 241 pigs have been affected out of a susceptible population of 23,691. No pigs have died.

The report says that the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has monitored pandemic influenza in domestic pigs since May 2009. Following this monitoring, pandemic influenza A/H1N1 virus was isolated from samples collected in 15 pig farms. The pigs in the affected farms were put under movement restrictions for three weeks.
