Conventional, Needleless Injection Technique Video
CANADA - A new video shot at the University of Manitoba's Glenlea Research Station and produced by Manitoba Pork Council demonstrates the use of both conventional and new needleless injection technologies for administering veterinary medications to swine, writes Bruce Cochrane.

Needleless injectors offer a virtually pain-free alternative to conventional methods for administering medications to livestock.
Manitoba Agriculture Food and Rural Initiatives recently introduced a new program under which pork producers enrolled in the Canadian Quality Assurance Programme can qualify for rebates of up to two thousand dollars on the purchase of needleless injectors.
Manitoba Pork Council quality assurance and labor programs manager Miles Beaudin says the video was produced to create a resource to demonstrate best production practices for the use of both conventional syringes and needles and the new needleless injection technologies.

The people involved within the video was myself from Manitoba Pork Council, Dr Tony Nichol from Puratone who sits on Manitoba Pork Council's Quality Assurance committee, the staff at the Glenlea research barn were instrumental to be able to provide their resources to us.
The facilities at Glenlea are all new.
They're state of the art barns and this combination provided the video with the character we needed.
The biggest advantage is it's a farrow-to-finish operation therefore we could capture filming of all production stages within the facility.
We didn't have to move to capture any of the production cycles such as if we were to start filming at a three-site production facility.
Everything under one roof was just fantastic.
As far as the video itself, it runs approximately 17 minutes.
It's very thorough.
The video covers all production cycles of the pig production so you get to see injections of all types of animals.
Mr Beaudin says needleless injection offers several animal welfare and food safety advantages and he encourages producers to discuss the benefits with their veterinarians.
The new video can be obtained through Manitoba Pork Council.
