EU Pig Prices: Steadiness Seen over Holidays
EU - Prices appear to remain steady throughout Europe this week.
Over the holidays, the prices remained unchanged, apart from the French and British quotations. The large quantities from before the Christmas season were smoothly sold to food retailing. Processed merchandise was partly stored in cold stores.
A new record was set by the German slaughter companies: 1.11 million pigs were slaughtered – as many as never before within just one calendar week in Germany. The French corrected quotation fell by 1 cent. There, demand is awaited to improve. In Great Britain, the corrected quotation also went down by 1 cent, which however must be attributed again to exchange rate changes. There, the quotation went up by 1 penny. The Irish quotation remained unchanged for the eighth time in a row.
Trend: In consequence of the holidays, a considerably lower number of pigs mature for slaughter is expected to be on offer this week. With supply reducing and demand being on decrease, these two have adapted to each other. Thus, the pig prices are expected to remain unchanged for the next few days.
