Details Emerge of H1N1 Flu in Danish Pigs

The Danish veterinary authority has sent an Immediate Notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

It reports two outbreaks of swine influenza, both of which started on 4 January in East (Zealand).

The first outbreak was in a herd of 3,200 fattening pigs at Jystrup. The second outbreak was at Tølløse, in a herd of 3,400 pigs (750 sows, 250 slaughter pigs and 2,400 piglets), of which 950 animals showed symptoms and three died.

According to the report, the farms are quarantined. No vaccinations have been given, and no treatment of affected animals.

The presence of the H1N1 virus has been confirmed.
