Free Range Pork Demand Prompts WA Piggery Deal
AUSTRALIA - The Craig Mostyn Group has purchased the West Australian Great Southern Pig Company from the Paspaley Group. The Great Southern Pig Company operates one of the largest outdoor piggeries, with businesses based in Narrogin and Albany, according to Australia's ABC.
The purchase will add 2000 sows to the Craig Mostyn Group's existing pig enterprises, meaning it can have 70,000 pigs "on the ground" at any one time.
Craig Mostyn chief executive David Lock says the purchase was particularly attractive because "free range" animal production is in demand.
"The free range market for pigs in Australia is growing," he says.
"Customers want to know where their meat is coming from.
"We're seeing Coles and Woolworths both increasing the stocking of the range of free range products.
"The Albany facility is probably the best free range farm in Australia."
