Classical Swine Fever Breaks Out in Guatemala

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 6 February 2010. The presence of the disease in swine was confirmed on 28 January at a semi-industrial farm in Palin, Escuintla.

Although the OIE, in conjunction with the country's veterinary experts, have managed to contain the disease, the source of the outbreak is still unknown.

The outbreak was reported by a private veterinarian accredited by the official veterinary services. It is limited to only this farm. There are no other cases. A nationwide epidemiological surveillance is ongoing.

Antibody detection ELISA and real-time PCR tests confirmed the presence of the CSF virus.
