According to data collected in recent years by the Ministry of Agriculture, each year about 130 thousand head of cattle and sheep are slaughtered, compared with 180 thousand pigs.

The Ministry explained that the increase in slaughtering of pigs is due to the increase in immigration from the former Soviet Union. Israel also imports most of its beef from South America, according to Israel National News.
