The new levy, the only of its kind in Australia, will begin on 1 July and run for three years, reports ABC.

Victorian Farmers Federation pig group president John Bourke says it's a good deal for the farmers, that he hopes will be embraced by other states.

"No-one wants to pay for anything these days, but I envisage that this will be of great importance to our industry," he says.

"I think the consumer is demanding that we raise our pigs under the highest standards."
