Pfizer Clarifies Use of Improvac

GLOBAL - Animal health company Pfizer has issued a clarification on the pig vaccine Improvac, which was mentioned in this week's column by Jim Long, the President and CEO of Genesus Inc.
The vaccine is used to help control boar taint in pig meat from intact male pigs, by using their natural immune system.
The vaccine allows the pigs to grow naturally while reducing reliably the levels of androstenone and indirectly skatole - the two major boar taint compounds - to below sensory thresholds.
The vaccine has been introduced by Pfizer in 56 countries.
"There are many positive benefits: it advances pig care, allows for more sustainable pork production and results in greater quantities of lean pork," said a Pfizer spokesman.
