Govt Funds Hog Waste Research in Manitoba
15 September 2010MANITOBA, CANADA - The federal and provincial governments will spend nearly $1-million for a research center to test better ways of disposing of hog byproducts.
Yesterday, the two levels of government announced spending $999,500 for a new research facility at the National Centre for Livestock and Environment (NCLE), which is located at the University of Manitoba's Glenlea Research Station. The facility is to be called the Byproducts Processing and Demonstration Facility.
CBC News reports that researchers will test and evaluate livestock byproduct treatment and management technologies in Manitoba's climate.
"We anticipate that investment in research of this nature today will pay dividends for the swine industry and Manitoba's environment in the future," said Karl Kynoch, Chairman of Manitoba Pork Council which represents the province's 800 hog farmers.
Under the Canada-Manitoba Western Economic Partnership Agreement the two levels of government are contributing $25 million each, over four years, to improve economic activity and quality of life in western Canadian communities.
