US Pork Production Down in July

US - Commercial red meat production for the United States totalled 3.79 billion pounds in July, down four per cent from the 3.96 billion pounds produced in July 2010, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Beef production, at 2.14 billion pounds, was four per cent below the previous year. Cattle slaughter totalled 2.77 million head, down five per cent from July 2010. The average live weight was down one pound from the previous year, at 1,272 pounds.

Veal production totalled 10.1 million pounds, eight per cent below July a year ago. Calf slaughter totalled 73,400 head, down two per cent from July 2010. The average live weight was down seven pounds from last year, at 244 pounds.

Pork production totalled 1.64 billion pounds, down four per cent from the previous year. Hog slaughter totalled 8.16 million head, down four per cent from July 2010. The average live weight was down one pound from the previous year, at 268 pounds.

January to July 2011 commercial red meat production was 28.0 billion pounds, up one per cent from 2010. Accumulated beef production was up one per cent from last year, veal was down three per cent and pork was up one per cent from last year.

While July 2010 contained 22 weekdays (including one holiday) and five Saturdays, July 2011 contained 21 weekdays (including one holiday) and five Saturdays.
