Azerbaijan Excluded from Countries Under ASF Threat

AZERBAIJAN - The International Office of Epizootics (OIE) excluded Azerbaijan from a list of countries likely to be threatened by the spread of African swine fever, spokesman for the State Veterinary Service under the Azerbaijani Agriculture Ministry Yolchu Khanveli told Trend yesterday.
"Azerbaijan was included from this list in 2008 due to an outbreak of plague in a village in the Gabala region. Due to the expiration of three year quarantine and the positive results of checks on animals in the village, Azerbaijan has now been excluded from this list," Mr Hanveli said.
African swine fever disease (Montgomery) was first recorded in 1903 in South Africa. Under natural conditions domestic and wild pigs are susceptible to infection which occurs through contact with sick animals. It poses no threat to human health, but is extremely dangerous to livestock because the disease is not treatable.
