African Swine Fever: Northern Hemisphere Jan 2010 to Feb 2012 - PROMED/HealthMap

TANZANIA - The country's veterinary authority has reported two new outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in Rukwa, which is near to the border with Zambia.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 4 yesterday, 16 January.

A total of 7480 pigs were found susceptible to the outbreak, out of which 794 cases were reported. A total of 689 pig deaths were recorded, and 1233 were slaughtered.

Illegal movement of animals and swill feeding have been determined as the main causes that led to the outbreaks.
