Excessive Bureaucracy under EU Subsidies

EU - Danish Farm Minister and President in-office of the EU Farm Council, Ms Mette Gjerskov, highlighted the need for EU farmers to be able to compete in the marketplace at a major debate at Copa-Cogeca’s meeting for Presidents from the 27 member states today, stressing increased bureaucracy is the biggest threat.

Copa Vice-President Lorenzo Ramos highlighted how farmers in many member states have recently been badly affected by drought and high input costs and urged politicians to take account of this.

"In Southern Europe, the drought is severe and only 30 per cent of the EU cereals area is likely to be cultivated. We consequently urge the Commission to introduce measures for farmers to help them get through this difficult period and to maintain the production capacity of the EU."

Copa-Cogeca also warns that the Commission's CAP proposals to impose further mandatory environmental constraints on farmers, without taking into account the impact on food security, will actually undermine farmers’ ability to meet future challenges and increase farm costs.

That is why Copa-Cogeca is calling for the CAP to focus on measures which ensure green growth in the future: measures which benefit the environment at the same time as maintaining production capacity, efficiency and employment.
