ACMC Marks Ten Years of Progress

UK - To mark its tenth anniversary, pig genetics company ACMC, is giving away an electronic recording package worth £1,500 in a free draw at this year’s British Pig and Poultry Fair (15 and 16 May, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire).

The prize will comprise a laptop computer and a year’s subscription to PigCom, ACMC’s windows-based pig-management software package, together with technical backup.

ACMC geneticist, Ed Sutcliffe, with one of the company's genetically-improved boars. In ten years improvements in genetic traits have amounted to £11.60 per slaughter pig.

PigCom tracks valuable performance parameters in both the breeding and feeding herd and analyses key performance indicators according to pre-set farm targets.

“This is an appropriate prize as accurate, easy-to-interpret records are a benchmark of any herd’s efficiency and progress,” commented Matthew Curtis, ACMC’s managing director.

Since the company was set up in 2002 it has seen amazing genetic progress. ACMC geneticist, Ed Sutcliffe, has worked out that, given some assumptions about the worth of each trait, the value of this genetic improvement in litter size amounts to £28.92 per sow, while average value of progress in slaughter pigs from traits such as feed conversion, growth rate and backfat thickness adds up to £11.60 per animal. For a 500-sow herd producing 25 pigs per sow per year this would be worth a total of £159,460 — an average of £15,946 annually.

To enter the free draw producers will simply be asked to fill in a simple form on the company’s stand No 85 in Hall 2. On the first day of the fair ACMC will also be laying on a traditional roast — on a first come, first served basis.
