Spain Likely to Comply with New Sow Welfare Rules

20 June 2012

SPAIN - Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, said the Spanish pig industry may be able to comply on time with the new rules on sow welfare (Directive 2008/120/UE), according to information in Agrodigital.

However, the Minister has stated that the Commission is serious and takes into account those countries that comply, so there is no distortion of competition with non-compliant countries.

The Commission also reiterated the importance of transparent and harmonized data on the degree of implementation of the directive in order to assess the situation, particularly in relevant aspects of the functioning of the internal market.

Also, reported plans to organize a meeting with all parties involved in the European pig sector in relation to welfare policy fences. This meeting will take place on 17 October.
