Laws Amended to Help Large-Scale Chicken, Pig Farming

27 September 2012

AUSTRALIA - A loophole which doesn't allow large pig and chicken production on strategic cropping land in Queensland is set to change.

Queensland Minister for Natural Resources Andrew Cripps wants to overturn a technicality which stops landholders from diversifying their farms, in what he says was an oversight by the previous government, reports ABCRural.

"A number of activities were exempt from the assessment process under strategic cropping land, but unfortunately, because of the way the legislation was drafted, certain activities such as egg production, poultry operations and piggeries have been left out of those exemptions," he said.

"What's required is an amendment to the state planning policy for the protection of strategic cropping land."
