RUSSIA - At the beginning of November 2012, there was a mass death of pigs at a private farm in the remote area of Altukhov Blagodarnenskogo district, Stavropol region. The death of these animals however, was not reported.
Disposal of the dead pigs was carried out in a dormant animal burial at a distance of about 1.5 km from the border settlements.
The Russian veterinary service were alerted to the situation via an anonymous email.
Samples taken from the pigs which had been burnt identified African Swine Fever (ASF).
Thus, the owner of the dead animals was trying to hide the information from the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Stavropol Territory.
