UK - Phase 1 of AHDB's pulled pork campaign has been successful, driving an additional £7.8 million worth of total fresh pork sales.
Figures released from the recent marketing campaign led by AHDB Pork show incremental sales of fresh pork, including added value pork products, of £7.8 million as a direct result of the first phase of the campaign, according to figures from independent research company Kantar Worldpanel.
The campaign, which ran for a six week period from 27 April to 7 June 2015, aimed to drive sales of pork shoulder in the short-term and revitalise the image of pork to benefit the category in the long-term.
The results show that the first phase of the pulled pork campaign has not only stimulated growth for the currently under-utilised pork shoulder joint, but it has also had a wider impact on the whole fresh pork category. Kantar Worldpanel figures demonstrate that the marketing activity alone (not including retailer price promotions), helped boost overall pork sales, slowing the rate of decline in the market, as well as adding around £1.8 million to sales of fresh pork shoulder and added value pulled pork products.
Paul Ward, Senior Consultant, Kantar Worldpanel, said: “The halo effect we saw for the Pulled Pork campaign was much stronger than that which we normally see for classic FMCG brands. We attribute this to the fact that the advertising was capable of driving not only purchasing of the featured product (brand), but also of the wider competitive market. This would not be expected to be the case for a brand where the same logic would say that advertising for a particular cooking sauce drives not only purchasing of that sauce, but also that of its competitor sauces.”
Kantar Worldpanel used its Consumer Mix Modelling technique to attribute the halo effect of £7.8 million on the wider fresh pork category to the AHDB advertising (TV and digital) and in-store marketing activity alone, isolating this from the impact of the price promotions. When the price promotions, arranged to support the advertising campaign, are taken into account this figure will be higher.
Other key results from Kantar Worldpanel data over the six week campaign period compared to the same period the previous year show that volume sales of pork shoulder increased by 19.2 per cent and value sales increased by 21.4 per cent.
Importantly, this was driven by 206,000 more UK households buying pork shoulder during the six week campaign period than the same period last year.
Kirsty Walker, head of marketing at AHDB Pork, said: “It’s clear from the results that the first phase of the campaign has driven an increase in pork shoulder sales by encouraging 206,000 more households to buy shoulder during the campaign period. This delivers on the overall objective for this first phase of starting to rejuvenate the image of pork by getting more people to try it. But what is especially pleasing is the wider knock-on effect the campaign has had on overall pork sales, £7.8 million of incremental sales, according to Kantar Worldpanel.

A concluding point of the Kantar Worldpanel evaluation is a ratio of sales return for levy payer money spent based on the marketing spend.
Its analysis demonstrates that the first phase of the campaign generated over £7 of additional sales across the whole category for every £1 spent on marketing activity by AHDB Pork.
AHDB Pork chair, Meryl Ward commented: “It’s great to see a campaign being evaluated in such a professional way, which clearly demonstrates value for money in this first phase. It is also particularly pleasing to see that a significant amount of the sales increase, 42 per cent according to Kantar Worldpanel, came from shoppers adding pork shoulder to their baskets without cutting down on other meat purchases. I hope that retailers are particularly are happy with this result.”
