More African Swine Fever Found in Lithuanian Backyard Pigs
LITHUANIA - There have been four more outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Lithuania, affecting backyard pigs and wild boar.One hunted wild boar in Kaunas region was destroyed after testing positive for the disease.
Three of the latest outbreaks occurred on backyard pig holdings.
The first of these was found in an already restricted zone for ASF using PCR testing for the virus' DNA. The disease was confirmed in both pigs in the holding in Panevezys region. One of the pigs died and the other was destroyed.
In the second backyard outbreak, one dead pig was confirmed positive for ASF out of a total of three pigs. The other pigs will be destroyed.
ASF was confirmed in blood samples from a pig in the third backyard outbreak in Vilnius region. Three pigs were destroyed from the holding to prevent the disease spreading.
