Meeting held on Sow Infertility

UK - Just before Christmas on behalf of BPEX, the MLC attended a meeting with Defra, PVS and VLA to discuss the emerging problem of sow infertility in the UK indsutry.

Based on the information that has been collated Defra concluded that there was evidence of an apparent new syndrome over and above autumn infertility and agreed that the problem merited further investigation.

A case definition was agreed:

“More than 10 percentage points drop in non-return rate 18-35 days post first service over any 9 week period“.

A small team was agreed to prepare:

  • An initial unbiased survey of PVS members to try to quantify the problem more accurately.
  • Design a case control study - this will seek co-funding from industry.
The first meeting is likely to be held week commencing 6th January 2003.
