Russia suspends import of Brazilian hog meat

BRAZIL - Russia has suspended the import of hog meat from Santa Catarina state (Brazil) alleging the occurrence of Aujeszky virus on the Brazilian herd.

The decision affects the largest exporting state of the country, responsible for 70% of the shippings.

From the 480,000 m tons of hog meat exported by Brazil this year, 70% came from Santa Catarina state.

The largest agribusiness companies - Sadia, Aurora, Perdigao, Seara - are sited in the state. The companies estimate a monthly loss of US$25mil-US$30mil with the action.

The Santa Catarina state hog breeders association say that only 1% of the state hog have the virus.
