Low hog market slashes Smithfield Foods profits

DES MOINES - Smithfield Foods, Inc., the largest U.S. pork producer, announced Feb. 25 its quarterly profit dropped almost 90%, to $5.3 million, versus $54.5 million last year, as a result of low hog prices and a weak fresh pork environment.
