About China's Pork Industry

China produces more than 44 million tonnes of pork a year - just over half the world total and almost three times the amount produced in the whole of the EU, according to USDA figures. China is currently exporting about 200,000 tonnes a year.

While small pig farms, typically producing between 100 and 1,000 head a year, account for 25 to 30 per cent of production, larger farms are now becoming more prevalent and overall production is still growing. Although the country is largely self-sufficient in pork production, there is a substantial import demand for offal. Products which are, by and large, unpopular in the West can command a premium in China. The country has a population of approximately 1.3 billion and a per capita consumption of pig meat of 32kg a year.

There are approximately 13 Yuan to the £ Sterling.
