Mr Attenborough will be joined at the workshop by MLC Veterinary Scientist Derek Armstrong.

The event has attracted speakers from as far afield at the USA, Canada, Denmark, France and Spain.

Mr Attenborough said: “PMWS is still a serious issue, not only for Great Britain but for the whole EU and other parts of the world.

“My paper will focus on the economic impact of the disease which is costing the EU nearly 3600 million annually in lost stock and there are other costs as well.

“Figures like these can mean the difference between profit and loss for individual British pig farmers.“

The workshop, organised by the Agricultural Directorate of the EU, aims to discuss the latest knowledge and identify future research needs. It takes place in Brussels, on Thursday, May 15.
