The latest projects cover a wide range of ideas, all with the same end in mind - improving supply chain efficiency to bring benefits to the producer and the amount of money being pumped into the schemes totals almost 390,000.

The projects include developing a branded local supply chain; setting up a web base sales operation targeting direct and foodservice customers; developing a range of specialist dry cured bacon products for foodservice and retail.

The scheme is being administered by Chris Lukehurst, BPEX pig meat marketing manager, who said: “The projects which were successful in the first round of grants are now beginning to show results which is very encouraging. “There are some exciting ideas in the second round and I believe these will be just as successful.

“There is still money in the pot and applications for further BPEX grants will be welcome.

“The third round will be open from September 1 until October 3, 2003 and we anticipate there will be a wide range of worthwhile projects if the first two rounds are anything to go by.“
